Agent Papers Quadruple as NeurIPS Meets on Three Continents

The Agents Have Arrived: 105 Papers Last Year, 488 This Year

No other topic gained even a single point of share. The new work asks whether agents can be measured, trusted and kept on task.

Papers on LLM agents grew more than fourfold in a year, the largest shift at NeurIPS 2026. Their share of the program rose from 1.8 percent to 5.4 percent, even as the conference itself grew by more than half. We grouped all 9,094 accepted papers into 111 topics by the meaning of their titles and abstracts and compared them with the 5,812 papers of NeurIPS 2025.

Inside the boom, the growth is in plumbing and accountability. Agent safety and attack papers went from 5 to 50. Robust and efficient agent execution grew from 11 papers to 88, self-evolving agents that learn from their own memory from 13 to 85, and agent benchmarks from 17 to 84.

The titles tell the same story. "Agentic" appears in 131 titles, up from 26; "long-horizon" in 76, up from 7; "evaluation" in 200, up from 56. "Enhancing", a staple of 2025, fell from 80 titles to 28 in a much larger program.

We also read the full text of 482 papers in the three busiest LLM topics. In 31 percent of them the model being trained is a Qwen model, GRPO is the method most often built on, and a third grade their outputs with another LLM. The full-text dive, D1.

Robots Get Their Moment

Vision-language-action models grow from 22 papers to 108

Robot action and navigation tripled, from 49 papers to 149, almost all of it from models that turn camera frames and instructions into motor commands.

Reinforcement Learning Moves Into LLMs

RL from feedback climbs from 80 papers to 179

Verifiable rewards and GRPO variants are now lines of work of their own. Policy-gradient methods grew from 55 papers to 134.

Video and Society Rise Too

Video generation went from 92 papers to 221, led by efficient video diffusion and motion control. AI and society more than doubled, from 61 to 145. Shifts, C1.

Who Gained Ground, and Who Gave It Up

Share of all papers, 2025 → 2026

NeurIPS grew 56 percent this year, from 5,812 to 9,094 papers, so a topic needs to grow faster than that to gain share. Bars show each topic's change in share in percentage points, colored by area; the small numbers are paper counts. Instruction tuning, human and embodied modeling, molecules and proteins and sample complexity lost the most share; some barely grew in count while the conference expanded. Topics with fewer than 40 papers in both years are left out.

482 papers

For the three busiest LLM topics we went past the abstract. An AI model read the full text of 482 of their 811 NeurIPS 2026 papers (the ones whose LaTeX or PDF we could obtain from arXiv; NeurIPS has not yet published PDFs) and filled a fixed card for each: which models it trains or prompts, how it trains them, where it evaluates, what data it uses and what it releases. Shares below are of those 482 papers; 2025 figures use the same topics.

Black: university or institute. Blue: company. Counts match institution names in affiliation text and are approximate; a paper with authors from two institutions counts for both.

Tsinghua leads, Google is the top company. Chinese universities and institutes take five of the top ten places. Google, including DeepMind, is the only company among them.

Singapore and Korea punch above their size. NUS and NTU each appear on more than 240 papers and KAIST on 222, ahead of MIT, Oxford, Berkeley and CMU in this count.

Industry is everywhere, but not alone. About 20 percent of papers include an author from a big tech lab.

Team size

The typical NeurIPS paper has three or four authors. 260 papers were written alone and 734 by ten or more.
